Rescue ====== Rescue mode is for when you have lost access to a slice and would like to try and recover without having to restore from backups. Root password reset ------------------- If you have lost the root password, you can use this to reset it. Click :guilabel:`Reset Root Password`. Your slice will be shutdown, the root password will be updated and emailed to you and your slice will be rebooted. You will receive the new password via email. .. Note:: The new root password will only be sent to the account that made the request. .. Attention:: It is recommended you reset the root password to something else as soon as access is recovered. Console ------- The console can be used as an alternative when SSH is unavailable. It provides OOB ("Out Of Band") access as if you had a keyboard and monitor plugged directly into it. This can be very useful if you are unable to login via SSH due to a bad firewall rule, etc. It is also useful if you would like to watch your slice boot (or shutdown). Just open up the console window before rebooting. To open the console, click the :guilabel:`Console` button to open it in a new browser window. .. admonition:: Notes - It needs to negotiate a secured backend connection and load additional libraries, so it might take 10-20 seconds to startup. - If it opens to a black screen, click on the screen and try tapping a key to wake it up. - The console is a direct login to your slice as if you have a keyboard and monitor plugged in, so you will need to type a password manually. - If the console resolution is too high to fit in the default window, you can just resize the window until it fits. Recover root when password auth is disabled -------------------------------------------- If you have lost your SSH keys and password auth has been disabled for your slice, you can recover access via the following method: #. Click :guilabel:`Reset Root Password` on the :doc:`rescue ` page for the slice. #. Once you receive the new password, click :guilabel:`Console` to access the console. #. Carefully enter the new password into the console. .. Attention:: It is recommended you reset the root password to something else as soon as access is recovered.
